Through friendly operators, he received an account with a virtually unlimited amount of computer time; its value at that time has since been variously estimated at $100,000 or $100,000,000. Hart has said he wanted to 'give back' this gift by doing something that could be considered to be of great value. His initial goal was to make the 10,000 most consulted books available to the public at little or no charge, and to do so by the end of the 20th century. This particular computer was one of the 15 on, the computer network that would become the. ![]() Hart believed that computers would one day be accessible to the general public and decided to make works of literature available in electronic form for free. By the mid-1990s, Hart was running Project Gutenberg from. More volunteers had joined the effort. All of the text was entered manually until 1989 when and software improved and became more widely available, which made more feasible. Hart later came to an arrangement with, which agreed to administer Project Gutenberg's finances. This effort greatly increased the number and variety of texts being added to Project Gutenberg, as well as making it easier for new volunteers to start contributing. DP became officially affiliated with Project Gutenberg in 2002. As of 2007, the 10,000+ DP-contributed books comprised almost a third of the nearly 56,000 books in Project Gutenberg. The majority of the DVDs, and all of the CDs mailed by the project, were recorded on recordable media by volunteers. However, the new dual layer DVDs were manufactured, as it proved more economical than having volunteers burn them. As of October 2010, the project has mailed approximately 40,000 discs. As of 2017, the delivery of free CDs has been discontinued, though the ISO image is still available for download. Scope of collection [ ]. • Hart, Michael S.. Project Gutenberg. HOVER CAR RACER BOOKS INTO MOVIES Disney purchased the rights to the film when the series was still only a manuscript, and the screen writing process began almost immediately. However, it is unknown when the movie will start production even though the rights are still with Disney as of 2010. In 2012 it was announced that Dan Harris was working on the film script and the film would be titled Hovercar. BEST HOVER CAR RACER BOOKS These are two best books in the Hover Car Racer series by Matthew Reilly, Crash Course (2005) and Photo Finish (2007). Hover Car Racer: This series features a Jason Chaser, an independent Hover car racer alongside with autistic brother commonly known as “the Bug” are competing in regional races with the hopes of reaching the Pro circuits but have very slim chances of doing so. During a local competition, Scott Syracuse, a man representing the International Race School is highly impressed with Jason Chaser skills, and despite the damage to Argonaut that places them in the last position, Jason is offered a position at the IRC for the next season. ![]() Jason accepts the offer, and he and his adoptive brother find themselves in Tasmania alongside with the best student in the racing world. Jason is paired with Mech Chief Sally McDuff, the man who will look after their pit crew, equipment and Tarantula, a robot that will perform most of the actual pit work. The pit work includes activities such as replacing the compressed gas for steering, changing the magneto drives, and changing the coolant to prevent the magneto drives from overheating and melting. During the first few races of the competition, Jason is bullied and outclassed both off and on the track by other racers whom all consider him an inferior driver. Furthermore, even for Jason and his teammates, the equipment seems to be against them as they suffer more than a fair share of faulty sub standard coolant, faulty magneto drives and failures on the part of their robot-Tarantula. However, despite this, they begin to rise in their rankings until it all becomes clear that they both have a chance of attaining position 2 of the four top rated racers who are destined to take part in the New York Masters. Jason and Ariel forge a friendly relationship which eventually becomes sour when Jason is critical after Ariel decides to use her body to gain advantage and become a part of Fabian, a lethal and yet influential pro racer. After Fabian dismisses her, Jason rekindles their relationship, and later the friendship consolidates after Jason overhears Smythe and LeClerq planning on sabotaging Ariel’s pit robot and also at the same time admitting to having been the reason for their previous equipment failures. Jason warns Ariel and the attempt to destroy the pit robot backfires which result in the disruption of the entire power grid thus all the pit robots fail to work. This forces all the racers to perform manual pit stop and due to the previous experience that Jason and Ariel had, they not only win the race but also ensure a place in the New York Masters. The brave Jason also attracts the attention of two individuals, Dido, a charming Italian girl and Umberto Lombardi a billionaire and the owner of Team Lombardi. Before the New York Master, Jason is involved in a fatal crash which destroys his Hover Racer and most importantly his confidence, but with the help of Bug and Sally, he can regain his nerve. However, is the confidence he gains robust enough to win him the ultimate prize? Meet Jason Chaser, hover car racer. He's won himself a place at the International Race School, where racers either make it on to the Pro Circuit – or they crash and. Electronic Books and Books Consulted Online Electronic books are cited exactly as their print counterparts with the addition of a media marker at the end of the citation: Kindle edition, PDF e-book, Microsoft Reader e-book, Palm e-book, CD-ROM, etc. Books consulted online are also cited exactly as their print counterparts with the addition of a DOI (or URL) at the end of the citation. Note: Stable page numbers are not always available in electronic formats; therefore, you may include the number of chapter, section, or other easily recognizable locator instead. Davidson, Donald, Essays on Actions and Events Oxford: Clarendon, 2001. Online Periodicals (Journal, Magazine, and Newspaper Articles) Online periodicals are cited exactly as their print counterparts with the addition of a DOI or URL at the end of the citation. Selling eBooks on Your Own Website Please see our other pages for information on and. Many publishers and authors ask us about selling their eBooks from their own website, and there are many great reasons for this idea, for example: • Driving traffic to the publisher’s or author’s website; • Helping build an author platform; • Side-stepping the royalties and fees charged by the big retailers; • Retaining control of the sale price (without the discounts applied by retailers or the upper limits some retailers have on price). Selling your own eBooks is completely possible, and can be very rewarding for these and other reasons. However, there are some drawbacks to selling your own eBooks. First, applying Digital Rights Management (DRM) to an eBook is expensive, and can become prohibitive if you only have a few titles. As is explained on our, the only standardized DRM you are able to apply to your own eBooks is Adobe Content Server. The license for Adobe Content Server is very expensive, and the cost of setting it up and maintaining it is also regularly cost-prohibitive. The easiest way around these issues is to not worry about applying DRM to the files. That actually works in your favor in other ways, as well, since it means you can sell Kindle files in addition to ePub files. Second, consumers are most comfortable buying eBooks from the major retailers because they have accounts already set up and the eBooks usually appear on their device after the purchase without any extra effort. Offering payment options like PayPal can be one way of making customers feel more comfortable about their personal data, and creating thoughtful, easy-to-execute download options for different devices is always an important part of selling your own eBooks. Third, most publisher and author websites do not have a very large reach, so their discoverability is less than that of the major retailers. ![]() More How To Sell An Ebook On Your Own Website videos. Jan 07, 2012 Can I sell books on my own website and use Amazon merely for fulfillment? I sell more ebooks through Smashwords and Barnes & Noble than I ever have on Amazon. This can be addressed with solid marketing to your target audience, adding informative content on your website on a consistent basis, and using the retailers as a platform to push your most popular titles. Fourth, most publishers and authors do not have the necessary infrastructure in place to sell eBooks on their own websites. Sep 09, 2015 - How To Sell Ebooks On Your Own Website - Wondering how people are seliing ebooks online and making money? In this brief. There are not many web store solutions that include the ability to sell digital content natively, especially with DRM applied. However, there are some solutions to this problem, so it is not insurmountable. ![]() If you are a publisher with at least 10 titles, Firebrand can set up Direct2Reader eBook sales capabilities to your own shopping cart, including management of Adobe Content Server. This allows your customers to purchase ePub files from you with the Adobe DRM applied, maintain a digital locker for downloads, and access your eBook store on their mobile devices. This also ties into Content Services, our eBook distribution service for publishers, and with NetGalley, our galley management service. For more information, please see the. Sideloading Files If you decide to sell or give away your eBook files on your own website, it is important to give your consumers the information they need to load those files on their eBook devices. This can become a little bit hairy because of the large number of devices on the market, so we normally recommend pointing consumers to the device websites for help and information on these processes. Below is some template text (and links) you can use on your website to assist customers in knowing how to load their files. Affiliate Links So, what if you don’t have the ability to sell eBooks on your own website? You might want to consider just pointing to the eBooks you have up for sale on the different retailers. We recommend you sign up for an affiliate account at each of the major eBook stores. These affiliate programs give you a kickback on each sale when someone follows a link from your website to the store. It is not the same as selling your own eBooks, but every little bit helps. Amazon: Apple: Affiliate program:; Link Creator: B&N: Kobo. FAQs Some people do this to increase the size of the free samples automatically generated by the eBook retailers. However, the Kindle and other devices will re-set the “last read location” to the end of the book if you have your Table of Contents there, so we normally recommend against that practice. HTML5 is the latest version of the HTML standard used on the Web and in eBooks. XHTML5 is a stricter and cleaner version of HTML5, with rules from XML imposed on the code. For example, when a tag is opened it has to be closed, and all of the tags have to be properly nested. XHTML5 allows the code to be more easily interpreted by the display engine, and it keeps the code more consistent and easier to edit. No, that is absolutely incorrect. EBooks look great with color, and we highly recommend using color images and even colored text (within reason) in your eBook files. Some devices have grayscale eInk screens, so the color will not show up on those devices. However, the color will be in the file, and it will work on all of the color devices. We do recommend you test colored text on a device with an eInk screen and ensure that the text will not be too light to read. Technically, yes. See an extended answer on our. KindleGen is Amazon’s eBook creation/compiling program. It is used on the KDP website to auto-convert files uploaded into the Kindle store, and it is also integrated into the Kindle Previewer program to handle the conversion of non-Kindle files loaded in that program. You can download KindleGen and get access to other Kindle creation information. Fixed Layout eBooks are HTML-based eBook files that are usually designed to match the layout of a print book. The key difference between fixed layout files and reflowable files is that reflowable eBooks allow the reader to have more control over the reading experience, such as changing the font size, background color, etc. For more information, please see our and pages. Amazon only sells eBooks in the Kindle format, but that format, just like ePub, is built using HTML and CSS files. Fixed layout eBooks are built using HTML, so they have more functionality than PDF files. For example, the narration overlay functionality used in many children’s eBooks is not possible in PDF files. In addition, none of the eBook retailers sell PDFs, so fixed layout eBook files offer the best sales opportunities. Libraries acquire their eBooks from services like 3M and Overdrive. These services sometimes offer an option for Kindle checkouts, but typically they are limited to ePub files because of the more common use of the Adobe DRM. Yes, Amazon’s Kindle Format 8 has support for many great design features, including floating images, tables, color text, embedded fonts, and more. Print book page numbers are included in the HTML code of both the Kindle and ePub formats as anchors. They are also listed in the PageList section of the NCX or Navigation file. The PageList is used by some reading systems (like the Kindle and iBooks) to show the reader the print page numbers of the book as they read. The different reading systems control what shows up in the header of your eBook. Most will display the title of the book, and some will also display the author name. That text cannot currently be set to display the chapter name or other information about where the reader is currently reading in the text. Some eBook reading systems will apply hyphenation to longer words to make the text better fit on the screen. This is typically controlled by the reading system, and will change depending on the font size and other settings the reader has set on their device. EBook file protection is called Digital Rights Management (DRM). Please see our for information on how it works and suggestions on how to use it. More on this subject can be found. Today I am starting a series on how to publish your own ebook. I have had a fair amount of interest in my posts on this subject over the past few months and I wanted to give some substance to my claim that self-publishing an ebook is not much harder than pushing Save on your word-processor. ![]() Important Note 2: If you own a Mac and a copy of Scrivener you may want to consider reading instead. It talks about an even easier way to format not only ebooks but print books. Honestly, this is really true, with the proviso that you are producing a novel or a short story and that you do things correctly right from the start. ![]() I won’t talk about picture books or books with footnotes, citations and references because I have no experience of such things. I have, however, as of this date, published six of my own novels and a few of my own short stories and I have found the process absurdly simple. I recommend reading Mark Coker’s excellent Smashwords Style Guide (available free ) if you want to have a full overview of the technical whys and wherefors of what’s going on but such an understanding is not really essential if you follow the procedures I outline here. With the seven steps contained in this article, you'll never have to read another one on publishing to Amazon's Kindle platform ever again. How to Set Up Your Amazon Kindle. The Kindle will require you to either create a new Amazon account. See How to Put Free Ebooks on Your Kindle and How. This guide is as stripped down as I can make it, with pictures showing you which buttons to push! If you just follow the steps outlined you should end up with a perfectly serviceable ebook. Today I am going to concentrate on the Kindle. I am not going to talk about any of the other options such as iBooks or B&N’s Pubbit because I don’t have accounts with them. Smashwords can get you on to all of these publishers and more such as Kobo, should you desire such things. I’ll talk about Smashwords in a future article. For the moment, let’s just concentrate on getting your work up on Amazon’s Kindle which is right now far and away the biggest game in town. You’re eventually going to need an account with. Just follow the link and then follow the instructions. You don’t need to worry about this too much now though. This time around I am just going to walk you through the process of creating the ebook file you will upload to Amazon. You are also going to need a few more things, most of which are free or which as a writer contemplating publishing a novel or short story you really should already have. You will need a copy of ( a free open source ebook library and ebook creation program), a word-processor and a novel or short story. Calibre works on Windows, OSX and Linux so the methods I am about to outline will work for most anybody with access to a computer. Let’s get started. Most ebooks use a simplified form of HTML, the same markup language used to make web-pages. They don’t really use or need complex formatting any more than a simple web page does. When writing a book you just need to keep your text as clean as possible, which means using a minimum of styles. For a novel, all you really need is a Header style and the Normal style. If your book is only divided by chapters, you should use the Header One style for your Chapter headers. If your book is broken up in a more complex fashion such as into parts, chapters and possibly even sub-chapters, you should use your headers hierarchically. Parts should be Header One, Chapters should be Header Two, sub-chapters Header Three. The reasons for this will become obvious later. I will assume for a novel you will only use chapters. For a short story, the only header you might have will be the title itself. You can use italics and bold in your text as much as you like but you should restrain yourself from using anything else. Don’t mark out your paragraphs with tabs and don’t use multiple paragraph marks for anything. Don’t create paragraph indents with multiple spaces, use a Paragraph Style with a first line indent instead. You can set this in your word-processor using the Styles Menu. Use Reveal Formatting to see exactly how things look. As you are writing, follow these simple rules. Separate out your scenes with a single line between paragraphs. Mark your chapter headings with the header style. If you have already written your book, I would recommend simply selecting all the text and removing any styles from the text that are in place (unless your book is already in this format, of course). Switch on Reveal Formatting and go through your text removing any paragraph indents created with tabs or spaces, if there are any. Once that is done, give all the selected text the normal style. Now go through your text using Find. Search out your chapter headings and make sure they are all in your chosen Header style. In this example you can see that I have centred and bolded the Header Style. Don’t forget to put your copyright information at the start of your manuscript. A simple declaration of title, author’s name and the release date is enough here. Go to the Save As menu and save the text as HTML. You’re ready to move on to the next stage. (One small tip here, I usually load my Word files into Libre Office or OpenOffice before I save them as HTML. Libre/OpenOffice produces much cleaner HTML code than Word. You can save directly from Word if you like though. Of course, if your chosen word processor is OpenOffice you don’t have to think too hard about this.) You need to start Calibre and add your HTML text to your collection. You do this by hitting the Add Books Button. (From here on out all the pictures will be from the OSX version of Calibre, but it looks pretty much exactly the same in Windows. I have used the Windows version for creating all my ebooks. It’s just easier to take annotated screenshots on the Mac.) Add your books HTML file to Calibre. After you’ve done that, you should see something like this. The HTML file for your book will be added to the central library list. If you look in the bottom right hand corner, you will see that the format is ZIP. Don’t worry about this. You will be changing it soon. Hit the Convert books button. (It’s the third one from the left, just in case your eyesight is as bad as mine!) You’ll see something that looks like this. On the top left of your screen you will see a drop down menu that says Input format ZIP. This is correct. Leave it like that. On the top right it should say Output format MOBI. If it does not set the output format to MOBI on the drop down menu. This is the format Amazon uses for it’s ebooks currently. Beneath the output format you’ll see a bunch of boxes for metadata such as Title, Author(s), Publisher etc. Set these to whatever is appropriate here. When you upload the book to Amazon it won’t have a huge effect since you will set this data on Amazon’s site for reference there. The metadata you put in here will still be in the file though and will remain if someone converts your book to a different format if you choose to sell it without DRM (which I think you should, but that’s an article for another day:)). Next you will need to add your cover. There are two points I need to make here. I have deliberately skipped the process of cover creation because that is really a separate post in itself. (Also I must confess that my highly talented wife does this for me.) You can create your own covers in a number of ways using Photoshop, the Gimp, many different image editing programs, even Powerpoint. You can also pay a professional to do your cover for you. The important thing is that you get an image you like and that it is 600 by 800 pixels. Obviously it should have your author name and book title and an image that tells your reader something about the contents of your book on it.) The second point I need to mention is that the box you will need to push to add this image is actually hidden in the picture above and, if you have a screen setup like mine, you will need to scroll down to reveal it. If you are anything like me and I don’t mention this, you may end up spending hours looking for the box and cursing me because it’s not there. This is what it should look like when you scroll down the screen a bit. Click on the Change Cover Image Box and load your cover file. Once you’ve done that you should see something like this (with your own image, of course.) The image appearing will tell you that Calibre has acquired your cover. Ok-that’s cover and metadata set, let’s move on. Click on the Look And Feel Tab and set the button to remove spacing between paragraphs. If you don’t do this your paragraphs will end up indented as as well as having an line between them which is overkill. Usually for fiction, the convention is to have indented paragraphs. For non-fiction, it’s non-indented paragraphs with a line between them. You should choose one or the other. You can ignore the heuristic processing tab and move straight on to Page Setup. Set input profile to Default Input Profile. Set output profile to Kindle. Now we come to structure detection. This is where the correct use of headers is important. Assuming you have used the proper levels of heading Calibre will detect the structure automatically and you can leave these settings as is. You can ignore the stuff in the box about Xpath expressions. This is just Calibre telling itself what to look for. You don’t need to do anything with them. The same applies to the Table of Contents tab. If for any reason you need to adjust these things manually, you can click on the Magic Wand button and a sub-panel will appear. If you need to make manual adjustments to the setup of your menu you can use the drop down to make sure that the HTML tags in your documents produce the correct levels of heading in your table of contents i.e Header One will produce a top level Table of Content link, Header Two will produce the next level and so on. If you’ve done your initial document setup properly, you should never need to do this. Calibre will do it automatically. I am just mentioning it here for the sake of completeness. You can ignore the rest of the Tabs and hit the OK button here! Once you hit the OK button, you’ll need to wait a short time while Calibre processes your ebook. You’ll see a little text box in the bottom right hand corner that says Jobs:1. A wheel icon will turn until the job is complete once it is done you should see this. And that’s it. You’ve created your Kindle ebook. If you click on where it says MOBI next to Formats: you will get a preview of your ebook in Mobi Format that looks something like this. Better yet if you click Path: Click to Open, you will get access to the actual MOBI file of your ebook. You can preview this on Kindle Previewer or transfer it to your Kindle or the Kindle app on your smartphone or computer to see what it looks like. This is the actual file you will upload to Amazon. We’ll deal with that next time. I realise all of these steps seem a little complex, the first time you do them but trust me, they soon become second nature. After a few attempts, you will be able to run through this whole procedure in a couple of minutes. This method also has the great advantage of letting you create EPUB files simply by changing the output format during the initial step with Calibre. Important Note: As of November 2012 Amazon appears to be rejecting some ebooks created using Calibre. More on this subject can be found. If you’re interested in finding out when the next Kormak book will be released as well as getting discounts and free short stories, please sign up for my. Hey Tim, Thanks! Scrivener does indeed have an excellent export function, which I have even used. The reason I do things this way is that my work goes to editors who don’t use Scrivener. They use Microsoft Word. This leaves me with two choices, the first of which is to import the document back into Scrivener once I have approved the changes. This is actually pretty easy on the Mac version but less so on the Windows version at the moment. (On the Mac, you can divide the document up on import at the Chapter headings, this function is not available on the Windows version.) The alternative is to do what I do here and just load the edited document into Calibre. In this series of posts I am trying to present the cheapest and easiest way to get books out there for the largest number of people. Since not everybody owns Scrivener or wants to use it, I think Calibre is the best alternative. I very strongly suspect that within the next couple of years all word processors will have an export to epub function which will make all of this largely irrelevant but at the moment this is how it is:). Hay Sir, This is just absolute well, you are my dream come true. For three years I have been trying to get someone to publish my stories. Now, I am over the moon! I will follow your instructions through once I have re-read the whole article. Problem is, my stories are 2 to 3 pages long. (A4 Verdana font size 8 on Microsoft Word). I have about 400 such stories. Maximum length I have ever written is 9 pages. I notice that there is a minimum pricing and I want to know, how many stories or pages should I be aiming for per book [I know you cannot dictate precisely but what would be reasonable?] for around a Fiver a book? Once again, Many Thanks for your wise thinking and publishing this article. May you continue to prosper. Hey Ray– I am at a loss as well. I used to export my file from Word to OpenOffice and then save it as HTML because OpenOffice’s code is cleaner, but I don’t know if that will help in this case. There are several alternative methods of creating an ebook. These days I use Scrivener (which has a free trial for 30 days). I have used Jutoh too which works very well. An alternative you could consider is signing up for an account with Draft2Digital. Their conversion process is excellent direct from Word and they do not (currently) mind you downloading your file from their site. File Format Options on MacThe file formats below can be converted to Kindle by uploading to the Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) website: • • • • Create Kindle-ready Files on Mac • File Format Options WordYou can use Microsoft Word or Apple Pages to create a Word (DOC) for conversion to Kindle. Word files with limited formatting translate well to Kindle. Be sure to use the 'Insert' function to insert any images, rather than copying and pasting. You'll also want to create your Table of Contents manually using the Hyperlink and Bookmark functions. Remove hard returns and insert page breaks at the end of chapters for optimal Kindle viewing. Check out our for more information. HTMLFor more advanced formatting, convert your Word file to HTML and then upload for conversion. Save your Word file as Web Page (HTM). In Apple Pages, choose 'Export' and 'Send to iWeb' to convert your file to HTML. For more information, see our. PDFYou can upload a PDF file of your book, but this has a larger margin for error. Graphics formatting, page numbers, and sidebars in PDFs don't always convert well to Kindle. After you upload a PDF, we recommend previewing your book to make sure it looks the way you want it to. If not, consider converting it to a Word (DOC) file. To create a PDF file from Word or Apple Pages, save as a PDF. At this time, KDP only supports uploaded PDFs in the following languages: English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Catalan, Galician, and Basque. EPubWith Apple Pages, you can export files in ePub format. To export your book file as an ePub file, select 'Share' on the Apple Pages menu bar, then 'Export.' Select 'ePub' as the desired format. Create Kindle-ready Files on MacInstead of uploading an HTML or DOC file to the KDP website for conversion, you can convert your book into Kindle format directly on your Mac. You can either upload this file to your Kindle device or view it in Kindle Previewer to check the quality of your eBook before publishing. Convert Your File with KindleGenKindleGen is a free command line tool for building Kindle eBooks. KindleGen is best for publishers and individuals familiar with HTML who want to convert their HTML, XHTML, XML (OPF/IDPF format), or ePub source to Kindle. From our Tools and Resources Help page. EBooks have grown in popularity over the past couple years, largely due to new ebook readers that have become available and more affordable. Many people are giving ebooks a try now that they have become more of a mainstream product. EBooks are excellent for a variety of reasons, but there are some situations in which purchasing an ebook is not the best choice. The following situations are those that I have identified as the five most common. When You’re Not Comfortable With Technology In order to successfully use an ebook, you must be able to install software, download a file, and open the file in the correct program on your computer. If you want to read the ebook on a mobile phone or e-reader device, then you need to know how to transfer files between your computer and that device. You might also need to install a program or app on your mobile device. If you’re not already comfortable with these processes, ebooks might be difficult for you to use. When You Need a Printed Book Many ebooks, if not most ebooks, are not printable. Even ebooks in PDF format are often not printable. This is because book publishers are concerned about copyright protection. They disable the printing function so that people can’t make illegal copies of the book. Other ebook formats, such as Mobipocket or Microsoft Reader, don’t have a printing function at all. In general, ebooks are meant to be read on your computer, e-reader, or other mobile device. Besides the question of whether or not the ebook will be printable, printer paper and ink is not free, so you’d end up paying for the ebook and then paying more to print it yourself. If you need a printed book for any reason you should buy the paperback or hardback version of the book. When You Want To Give The Book as a Gift eBooks are often not able to be given as a gift for the same reason that they aren’t printable. Book publishers are very concerned about software piracy, so most ebooks are sold with DRM (digital rights management), which ties the ebook to a specific user account. If you email an ebook to someone else, or give it to them on a disk or flash drive, the ebook won’t open once it’s on their computer because their software is not registered to your user account. Posts about palm written by The eBook Reader. If you buy an ebook and then print it. I think Mobipocket Reader is a great ebook reader. E-books are available almost instantly on users' computers or e-reader devices. However, sometimes individuals want to print their e-books for extra convenience or to. With eBooks you no longer have to print out books or purchase them on shops. MobiPocket Reader (MOBI. How-to > Create PDF > How to Convert eBook to PDF. Mobipocket is a free e-reader program that lets you read, annotate, and create e-books from your PC or from your smartphone or mobile device. The application is. If you would like to give an ebook as a gift, look for a gift certificate option instead of buying the ebook yourself. When You Don’t Know What You Need Before you buy an ebook, it’s best to do a little bit of research to find out what type of ebook you need. EBooks come in different formats, and not all work on every operating system or mobile device. If you don’t already know, find out which operating system your computer or device uses. From there, you can research ebook formats and determine which format will work on your operating system. Next, you should install any software that’s required for that type of ebook. Once you’ve taken those preliminary steps, you’ll be ready to find ebooks that you want to read. When You Want The Text Read Out Loud “Text-to-speech” is sometimes a feature that people look for when buying ebooks. Unfortunately, it is often disabled in the ebook (again, because of DRM), and sometimes it’s just not available at all. ![]() ![]() ![]() Even when it is available, it’s just not very good. Sometimes people even buy ebooks with the intent of putting them onto their iPod to listen to. That is not what ebooks were designed for, and it doesn’t work at all because ebooks don’t contain an audio track. When you want an audio recording of a book, the best option is to buy the audiobook instead of the ebook. The situations I’ve explained above are not only common situations in which you should not use ebooks; they are also some of the most frequent reasons why people get frustrated with ebooks. When someone buys an ebook with the hope that it will do something that ebooks aren’t capable of, they quickly become disappointed. EBooks aren’t meant to replace paper books, and you don’t have to use them. It’s best to think of ebooks as just one book format that is available. You wouldn’t buy an audiobook when you wanted a paper book, and likewise, there is no need to buy an ebook if it’s not really the best choice for you. Use ebooks when you want a book in digital format to read on your computer, e-reader, tablet, or mobile phone. Here is the quick answer: Most ebooks are not printable, and if you’re not sure whether an ebook is printable, it’s best to assume that it is not. This question regarding whether ebooks are printable or not seems to have become less of an issue over the past year or two, as more ebook reader devices have become available and as they have become more popular. Before that, ebooks were being used on the computer more than they are now. Also, people would often purchase an ebook with the intent of downloading it to their computer and then printing a copy. Personally, I think that’s pretty silly. I am guessing that the idea behind this method is that you could buy an ebook and print it faster than you could buy a paper book and wait for it to be delivered. But when you consider the cost of printer paper and printer ink, I don’t think it makes much sense. Another situation that might lend itself to printing an ebook is when an independent author has self-published his/her book as an ebook, but it’s not available as a paper book. In that case, a person might be interested in the content of the book but not want to read it on a screen. In this situation, printing an ebook makes a little more sense, but it still seems like way too much trouble to me. The majority of ebooks that you’ll buy are not printable at all. Let’s consider each popular ebook format separately: Kindle AZW Format: I don’t own a Kindle or use Kindle ebooks (I have a ) so I’ve never tried to print a Kindle ebook. However, I searched Amazon’s section and I couldn’t find any information about printing at all. This leads me to believe that Kindle ebooks don’t have a printing function. Since they are designed to be read on Kindle devices, or other Kindle apps for your computer or mobile devices, it makes sense that a printing function would not have been built into the software. Microsoft Reader Format: Microsoft Reader ebooks are not printable at all. Microsoft did not build a printing function into the software. Mobipocket Reader Format: Mobipocket Reader ebooks are not printable at all. Again, Mobipocket did not build a printing function into the software. This makes sense because even though Mobipocket ebooks can be read on a Windows PC, they were primarily designed for reading on mobile devices like Blackberrys, Windows Mobile, Palm OS, etc. Palm eReader Format: Again, same story. There is no printing function because this software was designed to be used on mobile devices. EPUB Format: EPUB ebooks are printable by default. If the EPUB file is being protected by DRM, such as with Adobe’s Content Server DRM, then the publisher of the ebook can disable the printing function. If you’re not sure whether this has been done, it’s safest to assume that you won’t be able to print the ebook. Don’t buy an ebook with the intention of printing it if you’re not sure whether you will be able to print it. PDF Format: PDF is the most likely candidate for printing, but you still have to make sure that printing hasn’t been disabled by the publisher of the ebook. When a PDF file is created with Adobe Acrobat, the creator of the file can change the document security so that printing is not allowed. (Other features can also be disabled, such as the ability to copy text from the document.) Other Formats like Word, txt, HTML: Microsoft Word files, plain text files (.txt) and HTML files are printable. But like I’ve said elsewhere, I don’t consider these files types to be real ebooks. Should eBooks Be Printable? My answer is: I don’t think that ebooks need to be printable. One of the main differences between an ebook and a paper book is that the ebook is not printed on paper. If you buy an ebook and then print it, you lose some of the benefits of ebooks like the fact that they don’t use up trees, and the fact that they are digital files that don’t take up physical space. Many book publishers don’t want their ebooks to be printable because they are concerned about copyright violations. Printing an ebook multiple times with the intention of re-selling it is much easier than scanning a book and then printing off multiple copies. There are some cases in which an ebook needs to be printable. Some ebooks contain maps, charts, or other graphics that might need to be printed. There are also ebooks that contain plays or sheet music that might need to be printed by the person who is using them. In those cases, it is important that the book publisher leave the printing function available for the consumer. But like I said above, if you are buying an ebook with the intention of printing it, check with the seller before placing your order. In a nutshell, you can determine fairly easily whether an ebook will be printable or not if you consider the format of the ebook and whether or not it is protected by DRM. If the ebook is EPUB or PDF, it will probably be printable if there is no DRM present. If the ebook is in a format that was designed for use on e-readers or other mobile devices, then it is not printable. If you’re buying a current popular ebook from a mainstream ebook retailer, you should assume that the publisher of the book requires DRM on the download, which will disable printing in most cases. Bottom line: If you want a printed book, buy a printed book. Don’t buy an ebook. The eReader program has undergone some changes in ownership and names over the years. It used to be heavily associated with Palm, being called “Palm Reader” then “,” and now it simply goes by “eReader”. (In fact, if you install it on Windows, it will go in a folder called Palm Digital Media.) Its website shows that it was bought by Barnes & Noble at some point, and it is now run by the same people that operate Fictionwise. EReader is another versatile program, like, that can be used on many different types of devices. Devices supported As of October 2010, this is a list of the device types that are supported by eReader: • Android • Symbian • iPhone and iPod Touch • Windows Mobile • Blackberry • Pocket PC 2002&earlier, 2003&later • Windows • Macintosh • Linux • OQO software wizard The main lets you choose which device you have, then download the software you need. They also have a clever that helps you decide. Drm The DRM that eReader employs is quite easy to work with. Instead of making you register for an account and authorize the software, you just enter two “unlock codes” when you open the ebook: your name and your credit card number. At first, the idea of entering your credit card number sounds strange and even scary for some people, but if you think about it from a DRM standpoint, it makes perfect sense. If a person gave away the ebook to a friend, he would also have to give away his credit card number so that the friend could open the ebook. Following that reasoning, if this person went further and posted the ebook on a torrent site, he’d have to give his credit card number away to everyone on the internet. A tip about the name: in my experience I have noticed that some people get confused about how exactly they should be entering their name. The name you enter should match up with whatever you registered on the website where you bought the ebook. The confusion that arises is that this is not necessarily the exact name that is shown on your credit card. So, don’t enter the name as shown on your credit card. Enter the name that you gave to the retail website when making your purchase. The ebook doesn’t know what’s printed on your credit card. Free eReader books eReader has a list of that you can download. That gives you a good opportunity to test out the software on your device to see if you like it before you purchase anything. However, you do have to register an account and verify a real credit card number for the free ebooks. Is a versatile ebook reading program, and it’s usually pretty easy for the average consumer to use. It can be used on a wide variety of devices like phones and dedicated ebook readers, and its DRM is actually easy to deal with. Mobipocket Reader can be used on Windows, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Palm OS, Symbian OS (such as the OS used on Nokia devices) and ebook readers like the Cybook and iRex iLiad. You can get a full list of supported devices on the Mobipocket site linked to above. It is likely that your device is included. You can’t use Mobipocket Reader on a Mac or on Linux, but if you’re running one of those operating systems, you can still get ebooks onto your mobile device through the manual install option. How DRM is handled Mobipocket Reader has two ways of handling DRM. The older method utilizes what Mobipocket refers to as a PID number (Personal Identification number). The newer method utilizes a username and password system. If you buy a Mobipocket ebook today you’ll probably get the newer system, but if you’re re-downloading an old purchase you might have to use the PID system. Either is easy and shouldn’t give you much trouble. PID System You’ll be asked to enter your PID before you can download the Mobipocket ebook. All you have to do is look up the PID in your Mobipocket Reader software, and enter the number where you are being prompted. To find the PID for your computer: 1. Open Mobipocket Reader 2. On the left-side panel of the screen, click “Reading Devices” 3. Find your computer in the list and click “Edit Properties” 4. Your PID will be displayed next to “Device PID (Personal ID)” To find the PID on your device: 1. Open Mobipocket Reader 2. Open the “Help” menu 3. Go to the “About” section. The PID will be displayed there. If you entered the PID correctly, you’ll be able to open the ebook after you download it. The website from which you purchased the ebook should allow you to enter a PID for your computer and your device. That way you can open the ebook in both places. EBookMall.com has a PID section of their that will probably solve any question you might have about the process. Username/Password System The username/password system is simpler. The website from which you purchased the ebook will assign you a username and password (or you will choose your own). When you open the Mobipocket ebook for the first time, it will prompt you to enter the same username and password. How to transfer ebooks to devices The transfer of Mobipocket ebooks between your computer and device is handled by Mobipocket Reader (installed on your computer). This is the process: 1. Open Mobipocket Reader on your computer. On the left side of the screen, click “eBooks”. Right-click on the ebook you want to load onto a device. Click “Send” and choose the device. If prompted to enter your username/password: – Select the correct retail website. – Enter your username and password. Sync your device to transfer the ebook. File formats Mobipocket Reader’s native file format is.prc. It can also import other files, such as PDF, HTML, TXT, RTF, Word, and EPUB. My opinion I think Mobipocket Reader is a great ebook reader. It provides the security level that publishers want, but it doesn’t ever feel like it’s encroaching on the users’ rights. In my years of providing tech support for ebook downloads, I’ve definitely seen that Mobipocket Reader has been easy to use for people. It is good to use on the computer and it runs on a lot of different mobile devices. All in all, it’s a good choice. ![]() The NOOK GlowLight Plus natively supports EPUBs and PDFs. The best way to ensure continued access to your ebooks – regardless of your chosen platform – is to save them onto a computer and open them out for general usage. Removing digital rights management (DRM) from your ebook files is useful for Nook users for a couple of reasons. For one thing, it means that you’ll be able to continue reading your Nook library on other e-readers when you come to replace your Nook. Conversely, you’ll be able to read ebooks from other sources (including Kindle) on your current Nook when the Nook store closes down. Here’s how you can do it. You can for Windows, OS X, or Linux. It’s free in each case, and you can donate funds to help the developer with its upkeep. Run the Calibre app and create a new folder for saving your ebooks into (the default should be fine). Choose your ebook reader from the list, and hit Finish. Related: Add books and remove DRM Click on the ‘Add books’ button at the top left and browse through your files to add ebooks to your Calibre folder, or drag and drop them into Calibre’s main window. Plug your device into your computer, and you’ll be able to import any books stored there, too. Of course, ebooks from sources such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble will be protected by DRM software, which means that you won’t be free to access them willy-nilly on any old device. To counteract this, you need to download a DRM-busting plug-in for Calibre. One frequently cited example is Apprentice Alf’s DeDRM tool. Download for or and unpack. Now open up Calibre, enter the Preferences menu, and click ‘Change Calibre behaviour’. Navigate to Advanced>Plug-ins and hit the ‘Load plug-in from file’ button, then select the DeDRM_calibre_plugin file you just downloaded and reboot Calibre. Now, whenever you import files into Calibre, it will strip them of any DRM. You can then use the ‘Convert books’ button to change the files to a format suitable for whatever ebook reader you want to use, now or in the future. Every single copy of it should come with a huge trigger warning for ableism, fatphobia, and victim blaming of every variety. Louise Hay claims two things that are odious: 1. All illnesses - including cancer - are caused by negative thinking, and not loving yourself enough. Thus, all illness can be cured by positive thinking, and self-love. She claims one of her patients fixed her poor eye sight by dealing with a childhood trauma. Everyone chooses their parents, and our 'energy' attracts people. So those who have bad energy, and don't love themselves enough, attract abusers, rapists, and financial poverty. What more can be said about this book, than those two main points? Actually, a few more things can be said. Louise Hay came to fame during, and because of, the onset of the AIDS crisis in the United States. She takes beautiful, enriching concepts such as self-love, affirmation and forgiveness, and then tells people their illnesses are a result of not doing these things well enough. The word 'charlatan' comes to mind. Also, 'immoral.' I absolutely believe in the mind body connection, that our mental health affects our bodily health, and that our mental states can lead us to greater or poorer physical well being. But to take such a giant leap, to claim (without any evidence except self-serving anecdotes) that you can cure cancer by loving yourself more? That people who are poor are just attracting bad energy, and don't love themselves enough? Oh, also, were you aware that fat thighs are caused by anger toward ones father? She takes excellent, inspiring concepts - self-love, forgiveness, compassion, and adjusting one's negative self talk - and coats it all in a big repulsive swath of victim-blaming and willful ignorance about biology, anatomy and medicine. My heart hurts for people who read this text and love it. It is full of great concepts that are overshadowed by Hay's belief that if one can control the mind, one can control the body. Even Buddhist monks know that you can't eliminate pain, that you can only be mindful of it, and be mindful through it. Louise Hay seems to think she can eliminate all pain and illness with mindfulness and self-love, which is a fantasy. Life is more complex than that - we can use self-love and affirmation to get through illness, but to think that we can eliminate pain by sheer force of will is setting ourselves up for failure, disappointment, and we're left blaming ourselves for not being able to sufficiently heal our bodies perfectly and completely with self-love. Bodies are incurably fallible, they cannot be perfectly healed - none of us get out of here alive. Self-love is important, but equally so is tenderness and acceptance toward our own mortality, and fallibility. Louise Hay sells the idea that positive thinking and self-love can help us get around this truth. But we can't get around the truth of our own mortality - we can only get through it, with self-love and affirmation. This book is repulsive. I can't wait to take it back to the library and get it out of my house. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, This is actually the second time I have read this book. First, this book is an entertaining read and has some good suggestions about how to overcome trauma and the importance of forgiveness. Also, she makes the connection that physical health is directly linked to psychological and emotional health, which is a logical assessment. However, since she has never worked in the arena of medicine, mental health, or any other related profession, it makes it difficult to put a lot of weight in her arguments. Specifically, she fails to adequately address how serious birth defects, such as downs syndrome, spina bifida, infant AIDS, cerebral palsy and the like are connected to mental health. While certainly once a person becomes cognizant of their emotions and surroundings, it makes sense to connect physical health with emotions. However, it is just outrageous and wrongheaded to think that any of the infants born with major problems are somehow responsible for their own health. She specifically cites birth defects on pg. 181, where she said that these conditions were due to karma and that the child chose to come that way. 'We choose our parents and our children.' Is she serious? This is absolutely an odious argument. I got this for my mother after a personal tragedy destroyed our family. Since reading this book I've: improved the relationship between my adopted child and myself improved the quality and communication of my marriage improved my health and diet moved my family into a bigger house in a better neighborhood started going to night school to embark on a new career made peace with my family situation, if not all family members- yet I still have lots of things left to clear out in my skeleton closet, it's not all butterflies and rainbows in my heart and mind, but I feel better and am finally getting past the fear that has held me back from doing the things I want to. It took a long time, and it really is a lot of work, to identify your own negative patterns and work to correct them, but it is incredibly worth the effort. It took the loss of my closest family member to force me to realize the extent of my own self-defeating habits, but I am once again able to take care of and love my children, to love my husband and myself, and better than ever before. I once held a great respect for Louise Hay, but in her recent publishing years, she has proven herself to be as much of a fraud as the authors she promotes, including the charlatan Sylvia Browne, former Amway star Jerry Hicks (with his wife Esther who speaks for 'nonphysical'), plagiarist Neale Donald Walsch, and phony PhDs Doreen Virtue and Caroline Myss. This book, though including some practical advice that she has pulled from Aaron Beck's work in cognitive science, contains an overwhelming amount of woo that makes outrageous claims regarding the power of mind. She disregards science and logic in exchange for dubious science that encourages self-blame and guilt regarding disease. This wouldn't bother me so much had the dawn of her career not been acquired through her claim to AIDs patients that they too could heal themselves if they got rid of their 'bad thinking'. Nowhere in these books does she speak of any AIDs patient's miraculous cure due to her work. And since this book, she has yet to offer any credible evidence that it can do this. I am appalled by this, not because it offers false hope, but because she is preying on a demographic of desperate people who are looking for answers. She claims to have these answers, but offers no proof beyond anecdotes and testimonials. This is no greater than the testimonials of Christian Science (incidentally their leader Mary Baker Eddy was known for acquiring kidney stones in her old age and relying on morphine to ease the pain even though her text claimed they should rely solely on God for relief). This is one of the most irresponsible feats that has ever been accomplished in publishing, and though I believe it could bring many some emotional relief as they use the processes that have been sampled from cognitive science, I also believe that it will and has brought to many a sense of guilt and self-blame regarding the tragedies of their lives. This book will claim a science to healing, but there is no institution (including Hay's) that offers hard proof of these facts. And if you will read the disclaimer in the beginning, you will be reminded that this author is not to be held accountable to your failure in using these principles. Due to this book, Louise Hay has now created one of the largest New Age publishing houses in the world. And she has made it clear through the authors she publishes that she is more concerned about the bottom line of her company than she is people's well being. It is a shame to say that this modern Mary Baker Eddy, known as the affirmations guru, is nothing more than a charismatic charlatan. If you do decide to venture into this book, do so with critical thinking skills and remember that this author will take on no responsibility for your success or failings in these teachings. Also look at the credibility of her own healing, which can be explained as a lie, misdiagnosis, or divine healing. Her words will likely validate you, send you swooning into good feelings, and overwhelm you with the presence of love as she constructs an imaginary world where you create your reality through your thoughts. Just make sure when you set this book down to leave that world behind as well. Louise Hay told a generation of dying gay men that it was their fault they were dying because they didn't love themselves enough. Her basic premise is that if you just love yourself enough, you'll never get sick. A stupid premise, to be sure. Anyone of any religion could read this book and get something out of it. I have to say that this book lightly touches these concepts and so it is a great read for someone who would know nothing about psychology or spirituality. In the back of the book she has a list of dis-eases of the body and then has a corresponding affirmation to help minimize whatever problem is going on. She basically says that diseases start in ones mind and we draw certain things to our bodies because our minds are thinking certain negative thoughts. What happens to our bodies are a direct manifestation of whatever negative thing is going on in our mind. This puts the power into the person to know they have tools such as their mind to possibly heal themselves or at least improve any situation. I love this book because it taught me at a young age that possibilities in life are endless if you do not bind yourself to any beliefs that will hold you back. It taught me to listen to myself and the things I say in my head on a regular basis. Then I can train myself to stop the negativity and replace it with love and a corresponding affirmation. What a beautiful book for someone with a semi-open mind and who wants to change their thought processes and create a life they want to live. I listened to this book as an audiobook of CDs. I only made it through the first disc before deciding it was not for me. At first it seemed to make some sense, that we poison ourselves with toxic thoughts, but then the author (who was also the narrator, I believe) started going off with platitudes, too many of which I took issue with. For example, she implied that studying history was irrelevant and that we should instead teach our children about how our minds work, psychologically speaking. Not a bad idea to examine what we teach our children, but at the exclusion of history? It just wasn't for me, as I said. I think all you need to know for this review is that Louise Hay thinks that all diseases are created by negative thinking. I think this is not entirely untrue with some important amendments that I will allude to. Taking the following literally, for example, is to be heavily discouraged: ‘Forgiving and releasing resentment will dissolve even cancer. While this may sound simplistic, I have seen and experienced it working.’ But given that our negative thoughts work so much on a lack of evidence, and everything to do with emotions, what’s the harm in me believing, all my life, that I have the power to walk through walls, and utilising the motivation that this thought generates, even if I never walk through a wall? Imagine I was claustrophobic and I said to myself, ‘I never need to get worried about being trapped in a confined space because if that happens I’ll just walk free.’ I trump an irrational fear with an irrational solution. I get that this idea is weird, but books and reviewers have too easy a time trashing the optimistic. Some anecdotes, then. I was eighteen and walking down the street holding hands with my then-boyf. I held back on reading this for a while, and, while reading, have (so far) held back on doing some of the exercises it suggests. Still trying to figure out WHY, but I have some inklings. I think, if you read this book and do the suggested affirmations and exercises when YOU are in the right emotional place to do them, this book could potentially be life-changing. There's so much good here, so much about rejecting negativity and embracing one's one loveability and worthiness, I think everyone shou I held back on reading this for a while, and, while reading, have (so far) held back on doing some of the exercises it suggests. There's so much good here, so much about rejecting negativity and embracing one's one loveability and worthiness, I think everyone should read this book. That said, my mother died of breast cancer. I know that she loved me, and wanted to stay with me; I know others who have loved, deeply and completely, and wanted to stay in this life. To suggest that if you love/accept yourself enough, you can cure anything, even cancer, feels to me more than a little bit like blaming the victim for not wanting/committing to healing enough. Possibly I am dumping my own baggage where it doesn't belong. Perhaps I don't want to accept the possibility that my mother did choose to die, rather than to stay in this life. I will say that, IMO, 95%+ of this book is great. But I also believe, rightly or wrongly, that even with the heart and spirit in the right place, even with accepting and loving oneself as much as humanly possible, that even with the perfect balance of diet and exercise and supportive family and friends and energies, some people will still die of illnesses and diseases, as well as accidents. Life itself is a fatal condition; human beings are not meant to live in perfect health, forever (not that we should resign ourselves without a fight to acceptance of illness and dis-ease, as Hay puts it so eloquently, either.) Maybe it's my pessimistic attitude that ruins the possibilities for me, I don't know. I do recommend this book, and plan to re-read it in the future. This book is one of those timeless classics that takes the fundamental precepts of New Thought, and makes them accessible, relevant and particularly practical for someone who might be facing emotional or physical challenges. Having been introduced to Louise Hay's work with this book, just hours before meeting her, I found it to be an invaluable tool for cutting through what I would have considered too much 'religion' and 'Jesus-talk' in the writings of Dr. Ernest Holmes. At the time that I read it, I was diagnosed with full-blown AIDS and told I would be dead within 24 months. I wasn't interested in religion or theology. And it was Louise's clarity, simplicity and ability to cut to the heart of New Thought, which led me to a 26-year healing journey. I recommend this book to anyone who is serious about moving through the obstacles, appearances and difficulties life sometimes presents, and learn the skills of life mastery. This book, and the study of Lojong (The Eight Verses of Thought Transformation)are indispensable tools for those committed to creating a radiant, wholesome and vibrant life. What is funny and being the cheater that I am, I take her New Age concepts and Christianize them, and boom, it is a Christian book my size:-) So anytime I read the word Universe, I simply read it as 'The Lord' and they book keeps reading more beautifully. The book has good points but thoughts are not deep, not developed, an can be simplistic at times, hence loss of my patience. By contrast, Joseph Murphy, was much deeper and I almost copied down every word in his book. He acknowledged the Maker for who He is while Louis Hay takes it all to something called Universe. The book lacks color and detail. I've read this book before and I know I will read it again. I refer to the 'Heal Your Body' section often if I am sick or I have an ache or pain, to learn the positive affirmation to say to 'release' the physical ailment. I saw the author, Louise Hay, on Oprah maybe 8 years ago and was instantly compelled by her sincerity, knowledge and compassion to buy this book. I have since given this book as a gift to many. Many of you may scratch your head or think I'm crazy for saying this, but I believe I've read this book before and I know I will read it again. Many of you may scratch your head or think I'm crazy for saying this, but I believe there is much validity to the the mind-body, negative thoughts vs. Positive thoughts, connection. I have worked in the medical field for over 20 years and work hands-on daily with patients with all sorts of mental and physical ailments and diseases. I have witnessed first-hand the power of positive thought and positive action at work, even with those who are severely injured or sick. Again, this might sound kooky to some of you in our modern age of technology, medicine and pharmaceuticals. Those have their place, too, but what can it hurt to learn to love ourselves from within, not criticize ourselves or others, or learn to forgive ourselves and others? The answer is simple. It can't hurt anything, only heal our lives from the very simplest to the most complex levels. I recommend this book to everyone. What I like about You Can Heal Your Life is that the reader can look up a specific illness to find out typically related emotional issues. This gives them a starting point in healing their life. For me, however, these connections were too vague and the affirmations didn't work for me. I was a novice at the time, and had trouble understanding the full impact. It was because of my lack of understanding, though, that I went in search of a simpler, more personalize method, and thus created my own. While I recommend this book for any healer's shelf, I advise they use it as a stepping stone for deeper exploration within. You can learn more about my book by visiting me on the author's website. This book takes the reader through counseling sessions with the author. While it has some very good things I found beneficial, it also has crazy parts. I did enjoy the illistrations throughout. First, the good parts. The book is very positive and helped me be more positive towards myself. It's OK that I made mistakes in the past, but I don't need to feel guilty because I did the best I could. Everyone else did the best they could as well, so I should move on and not hold grudges. I've also tried to remove 'should' from my vocabulary. If I want to do something, I will. The book helped me realize how often I told myself that I should have a cleaner house. No, if I wanted to spend more time cleaning or hire someone to clean, it'd be clean; however, it's not worth it to me. I could have a cleanner house, but I don't want to spend the time or money on it. I really liked the positive affirmations throughout the book: 'Today is a wonderful day. I choose to make it so. All is well in my world.' Now, the crazy parts. The book actually has an index to look up your physical problem and see what mental/emotional problem caused it. For example, a nose bleed is probably caused by 'A need for recognition. Feeling unrecognized and unnoticed. Crying for love.' I just don't buy it. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, I was told that I should read this book because it would be helpful to me. The book is very, very focused on the New Age idea of the Law of Attraction, if you put out good then good will come back to you, and to an extent I do agree with that idea, and that is a good lesson from this book. However, that being said, it is the sole good lesson that I was able to see in this book. Hay takes everything and spins it as a result of negativity in one's life. It is extreme. I can go out everyday and I can say, 'Today will be good.' I do believe that will have a positive impact on my day, but I don't believe that I can say, 'Today I stop having asthma.' And then throw away my inhaler. That would be irresponsible and might well kill me or I could end up in the hospital. It's because you want to be fat and cannot let go of some form of negativity in your life. Do you have cancer? It's because you hold resentment towards someone. Are you poor? It's because you want to be poor. You could be rich if you believed you could be. She states several times that if you get upset with her statements or disagree with her it's not because you're right or she's wrong or because there's room for disagreement but simply that it means that you need to change and that she's hit upon that fact. At one she states that if you've been abused it's because you've chosen that path and that challenge and it isn't the fault of your abuser. It was your choice before you were born. This is victim blaming and just about as wrong as it gets. Yes, I am angry about that. Yes, a victim can need to change his or her mind about how they act or respond to something as they go through the healing process, but they didn't chose what happened to them. They did not say to their abuser at any point in time that they wanted to be abused, and to communicate that to people looking for help is disgusting. I have never done the exercises in You Can Heal Your Life. I would have felt rather silly to stand in front of a mirror and tell to my reflection that 'I love you', but I benefited from all the words of wisdom in it and the little thought provoking quotes. This is a book that I would recommend to anyone who is going through a bad time, or suffers from lack of self confidence but maybe not to someone who is deep in depression, they would need professional help. But this book is good for someone who wants a little boost of the ego and feel better about themselves. I suppose if one does all the exercises, they would benefit better. But I did not do them and I still found it a fantastic books. I am fond of that book, even though I do not need it any more, I have it on my Kindle too. Maybe because it reminds me of my youth and of all the way I have walked. But to become who I am today, it is not the book which has done it. It is me, with a little help from Louise Hay. This is something I like to tell people. A book will not change your life. Only you have the power to do that. Louise Hay is a very inspirational lady. Her loveliness shines through her writings. I recommend all her books. So many of us are just suffering quietly inside, and pretending that the world is just fine and peachy. So many of us would never utter a word about our inner tumult to anyone and in fact, I am certain that Louise Hay wrote her book “You Can Heal Your Life” for the silently misguided souls among us much more so than the ones that are openly unhappy and miserable and in dire need of help. To come from such a tragic childhood, and to have to endure so much pain and lovelessness, it is really hard to believe that she has turned into such a leader in helping us heal. I really enjoyed the book. The affirmations are powerful but even as such, they are very new to me so I am learning to use them one day at a time. I keep repeating them and I realize the more I use them, the more I am in need of them because my way of thinking has more than limited my potential and my true self. I loved _ LOVED _ the video - and will be watching it many times again. I believe you can find it on YouTube. The book is inspiring and calming and also an encyclopedia of references for healing every part of your body with healing your mind and your thinking first. THANK YOU Louise for such a gift. I loved the quotes Ms. Hay provides. Such as: 'In the infinity of life where I am, all is perfect, whole, and complete. I recognize my body as a good friend. Each cell in my body has Divine Intelligence. I listen to what it tells me, and know that its advice is valid. I am always safe, and Divinely protected and guided. I choose to be healthy and free. No sweetness left. New Thought Pattern: This moment is filled with joy. I now choose to experiene the sweetness of today. For lower leg problems. Probable cause: Fear of the future. No wanting to move. New Thought Pattern: I move forward with confidence and joy, knowing that all is well in my future. The ones I chose to look up I found revealing, enlightening, and truthful. She moved to Chicago, where she worked in menial jobs, before moving in 1950 to New York. At this point she changed her name and began a career as a fashion model. She was successful at this, working for Bill Blass, Oleg Cassini, and Pauline Trigere. In 1954, she married Andrew Hay, but after fourteen years of marriage Louise was devastated when Andrew left her for another woman. Hay said that she found the First Church of Religious Science on 48th Street, which taught the transformative power of thought. Hay revealed that here she studied the metaphysical works of authors like Florence Scovel Shinn and the Religious Science founder Ernest Holmes. In the early 1970's Hay became a Religious Science practitioner. In this role she led people in spoken affirmations meant to cure their illnesses. She also became popular as a workshop leader. She studied transcendental meditation with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at his university in Fairfield, Iowa. In 1977 or 1978 she found she had cervical cancer, and she concluded that its cause was her unwillingness to let go of resentment over her childhood abuse and rape. She refused medical treatment, and began a regimen of forgiveness, therapy, reflexology, nutrition, and occasional enemas, and claims she rid herself of the cancer. She declared that there is no doctor left who can confirm this story, but swore that it is true. In 1976 Hay wrote a small pamphlet, which came to be called 'Heal Your Body.' This pamphlet was enlarged and extended into her book You Can Heal Your Life, which was published in 1984. As of February 2008, it is still on the New York Times best sellers list. Around the same time she began leading support groups for people living with H.I.V. Or AIDS that she called Hay Rides. These grew from a few people in her living room to hundreds in a large hall in West Hollywood. Her work with AIDS patients drew fame and she was invited to appear on 'The Oprah Winfrey Show' and 'Donahue' in the same week in March, 1988. You Can Heal Your Life immediately landed on the New York Times Best Sellers List. More than 35 million copies are now in print around the world in more than 30 languages and has been made into a movie. Louise Hay established Hay House Publishing. It is the primary publisher of books and audio books by Deepak Chopra and Doreen Virtue, as well as many books by Wayne Dyer. In addition to running her publishing company, Hay runs a charitable organization called Hay Foundation that was established in 1985. Instead, we could teach them important subjects such as How the Mind Works, How to Handle Finances, How to Invest Money for Financial Security, How to be a Parent, How to Create Good Relationships, and How to Create and Maintain Self-Esteem and Self-Worth. Can you imagine what a whole generation of adults would be like if they had been taught these subjects in school along with their regular curriculum?” —. Hay, bestselling author, is an internationally known leader in the self-help field. Her key message is: 'If we are willing to do the mental work, almost anything can be healed.' The author has a great deal of experience and firsthand information to share about healing, including how she cured herself after being diagnosed with cancer.
